“If successful and unsuccessful people share the same goals, then the goal cannot be what differentiates the winners from the losers”
James Clear
The vast majority of people who embark on a fat loss journey are unsuccessful. They might have some initial success but before long, they revert back to their old ways and the weight begins to creep back on, leaving them feeling stuck, frustrated and at a loss with how to make progress.
However, some people actually are successful in their pursuits, not only achieving the fat loss they desire but also managing to keep it off for good.
This poses an interesting question…
If two people set a goal of losing fat, one is successful in achieving their goal whilst the other is not, then is setting the goal the determining factor of the outcome?
The result would seem to suggest it is not.
So if the goal itself doesn’t determine the outcome then what does?
In this blog, I will offer 3 ways in which those who are successful on their fat loss journey, actually achieve their desired outcome…
Clarity
They know their ‘why’
Why they are looking to lose fat, why they are embarking on a period of transformation, why they are going to start saying ‘No’ to certain things that have held them back previously. By identifying their ‘why’ they have total clarity on what they are doing it all for, using it as their driving force to keep showing up, even when its so much easier not to.
They are specific with their goals
The goal of losing fat is far too broad. How much fat do you wish to lose? When would you like to lose it by? Those who are successful on their fat loss journey know where they want to get to and have a pretty good idea of how long it’s going to take them. This helps to avoid overwhelm and brings a level of perspective when your mind starts to tell you you’re not making quick enough progress.
They are aligned with who they wish to become
Ask yourself this question.. ‘who is the person you wish to become?’ Now ask yourself this.. ‘are your current behaviours in line with the behaviours of the person you wish to become?’ To be successful in your fat loss journey, you must adopt the values and actions of your future self, the future self you are striving to become. Is that the person who values their health by getting outdoors for walks and makes a conscious effort to fuel their body with nutritious foods? Or is that the person who too often opts to put their feet up, whilst watching Netflix with a tub of Ice Cream over moving their body?
Mentality
They have self awareness
Without self awareness, it’s far too easy to keep repeating the same patterns over and over again. Those who are successful on their fat loss journey are able to identify the triggers that have previously kept them stuck. Maybe being stressed out at work has led to you overeating to offer some short term comfort. Maybe a lack of sleep due to doom scrolling before bed has led to you skipping your workouts. Being aware of the reason for your actions will help you fix the problem before it spirals out of control.
They play the long game
If you have a lot of fat to lose, the truth is you are not going to lose it all overnight. You didn’t just wake up with excess fat, so don’t expect to lose it overnight either. In order to be successful on your fat loss journey, your focus should be on a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix. Consistently working on the habits and behaviours that are going to last a lifetime, rather than extreme measures that will only be sustainable for a short period of time.
They show self compassion
Nothing in life is perfect and neither will your fat loss journey be. People who are successful in shedding unwanted fat don’t beat themselves up for a having a ‘bad’ day. Instead they see it for what it is and understand that these things happen. Rather than berating themselves, they will dust themselves down and get back on track, appreciating that it is what they do the majority of the time, rather than some of the time, that will keep them making progress.
Systems
They set non-negoitables
Non-negotiables are a set of habits or actions you live by in order to achieve a desired outcome. Those who are successful on their fat loss journey understand what it is they need to do day in, day out, in order to achieve their goal. Whether it’s walking a set amount of steps, getting a minimum amount of sleep, tracking their body weight and food intake. It’s these small things that performed consistently over a long period of time, help you to make the progress you desire.
They are realistic with what they can accomplish
At the start of a fat loss journey motivation is high and the desire to change is through the roof! It is at this point where so many people fail, right before they even get started. I get it, it’s tempting to go full throttle, exercising everyday, aiming for a crazy number of steps. But that plan of action is simply not sustainable. To successfully reach your goal, you need to be realistic with what you can accomplish given your lifestyle. 3 workouts every week for a year is going to see you make a lot more progress than working out every day for 2 weeks before burning yourself out. More does not always lead to better.
They measure their progress
The data doesn’t lie. We live in a world where we are blessed with access to data. Whether that’s recording your steps and workouts, tracking your weight or calories, monitoring your sleep. As humans we have a tendency to lead with emotion. ‘I feel like I’m not making progress’, ‘I think I ate well today’. Those who are successful lean into the data available more than going off their emotions as it helps provide you with a much better indicator of the progress you are actually making.
